Sheila Jordan and Mark Murphy
One For Junior (Muse)
Sheila Jordan sounds wonderful on this release, her natural musicianship, liquid voice, and perfect intonation evident on every track. Her scat singing is so relaxed and intelligent that she may even win over some jazz lovers who usually shun singers. The same can not be said for Mark Murphy, who is outclassed by Jordan at every turn. His scatting is self conscious, at times even histrionic. He is at his best when playing it straight, as on "Round About." The rhythm section is led by Kenny Barron on piano, and they swing divinely for their leaders.
